But it thinks in Cree!

What does the future of language, information, and communication look like and can Cree have a role to play?

We are training Indigenous Large Language Models

AI Anima is an Indigenous-led initiative dedicated to building a modern language and knowledge model that learns, processes, and communicates primarily in Cree, supporting revitalization, education, and the continuity of Cree worldview into the age of artificial intelligence. Our research contributes to a range of advanced AI applications designed for native speakers, new speakers, and everyone in between.

Language learning tools, conversational companions, entertainment, and community-controlled digital knowledge platforms.

Applications of this work include language learning tools, conversational companions, entertainment, and community-controlled digital knowledge platforms. As the model matures, it will support community programming, create employment pathways for Indigenous youth, and contribute to broader conversations about Indigenous data sovereignty and ethical AI. Our framework is scalable to any interested communities.

Ethical AI

Data Sovereignty

All data collected through this project, including recorded speech, text, annotations, and resulting models, is governed by community leadership, consistent with the principles of OCAP® (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession). This means:

  • Communities own their data

  • Communities decide how data can be used

  • Communities control who has access

  • Communities retain custody of the data and models

Machine Learning

Technical Expertise

Our project is guided by leaders with strong technical expertise in machine learning, computer science, and language technology. Together, they bring years of experience in building cutting-edge systems that honour cultural context while advancing innovation.

AI Anima is further strengthened through collaboration with a broad network of thought leaders, academics, and technical advisors. Their diverse perspectives support our mission by contributing Indigenous knowledge, linguistic insight, and world-class research guidance. Through these partnerships, we ensure that our work is both technically rigorous and grounded in community values.

Community Empowerment

Talent Nest

AI Anima is committed to growing talent within the community. We actively train and hire community members to participate in every stage of the project—from data collection and annotation to language research, software development, and cultural advisory roles.

By investing in skills development, mentorship, and paid work opportunities, we help build long-term capacity in technology, language preservation, and digital sovereignty. Our goal is not only to create cutting-edge tools, but to ensure that the benefits of this work remain with the people it serves—empowering community members to lead, innovate, and shape the future of AI in our own language.
